Atlantic City’s historic Marathon will see increases in athlete participation on Sunday, October 17 in conjunction with the Atlantic City Marathon Race Series AmeriHealth New Jersey Atlantic City Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K and 5K presented by US Army as the New Jersey Marathon scheduled to take place in Long Branch cancels their race scheduled for the same date.

The third race in the 2021 Race Series, already fueled by runner confidence after the success of the AmeriHealth New Jersey April Fools Half Marathon in April and Bungalow Beach Boardwalk 5 Miler in June of 2021, will take on as many as 1,500 additional runners from the New Jersey Marathon throughout the weekend’s four events.  Organized by the Atlantic City Marathon Race Series, a division of the Milton & Betty Katz JCC in Margate, the event has capacity to accommodate these additional runners and is working directly with New Jersey Marathon organizers to transfer participants into their respective events.  “It is with great excitement and strategic planning that we continue the long history of the Atlantic City Marathon and the culmination of our 2021 Race Series including three in – person events after a year of hosting races virtually due to COVID-19,” said Samantha Wolf, Esq., JCC Board President. “We are preparing for the increase in participation by increasing some of our participant materials, course assets and hopefully more volunteers.”

The AmeriHealth New Jersey Atlantic City Marathon & Half Marathon presented by US Army will take place on Sunday, October 17 and the 10K and 5K on Saturday, October 16 beginning and ending on the Boardwalk at Bally’s Atlantic City. Including the transferred New Jersey Marathon runners, the Race Series anticipates as many as 4,000 runners throughout the race weekend up from 2019’s 2,400 event participants.

“Atlantic City is proud to be the home of the third oldest continuing marathon in the United States,” said Mayor Marty Small, Sr. “We’re committed to working with Race Series organizers to provide a safe and fun experience for new and returning athletes coming to our great City for the 2021 Marathon.”

“It felt amazing to get back to racing after a long year. There’s no better feeling then getting to that start line and finishing the race knowing that you accomplished something. Racing is finally back and I couldn’t be happier,” said Lori Rendo, 5 Miler finisher of Bardonia, NY.

The 2021 event sponsors include AmeriHealth New Jersey, US Army, Dogfish Head Beer, AtlantiCare, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Borgata Atlantic City, Bally’s Atlantic City, Orozco Orthopaedics and the Atlantic City Sports Commission.

Hipstory Art Series

The Katz JCC in Margate will host an art exhibition from the Hipstory Art Series, a collection of thirty six unique images featuring historical leaders and icons by Israeli artist, Amit Shimoni beginning March 21.

Ideated and conceived by Amit Shimoni in 2014, HIPSTORY revives and reinterprets icons of both past and present to be integrated into the conversations of today. Shimoni, whose medium spans across various aspects of visual communication, sees each member of the HIPSTORY society as a, “Visual Wikipedia page,” giving people of all ages the opportunity to relate to an iconic figure in a new way. HIPSTORY informs and educates viewers with a curated cast of mentors that shed light on why our world is the way it is.

Shimoni’s work is known for the contemporary elements he chooses to incorporate, like a hairstyle, necklace, or tattoo that reference details from a given person’s life. Beyond the eye-catching nature of the work, the artist uses this modern motif as a way to both encourage curiosity as well as underscore the unexpected relatability of a particular member.

“HIPSTORY gives people the chance to use historic icons as role models on a daily basis and integrate them into the framework of their lives in a meaningful way,” Shimoni explains.

The casual depictions of leading figures are crafted to instill a sense of relevancy and suggest commonality with the viewer. Icons are studied and chosen for their significance in today’s cultural and political dialogue. Shimoni seeks to connect past with present, by making history’s greats influential again while highlighting the movers and shakers of today.

“To transition from ‘famous person to friend’, visual insignia in the artwork highlight where an icon was from or reference personal details to reveal a more human and relatable persona,” Shimoni reveals.

While completing his degree in Visual Communications at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Shimoni began his journey towards what would soon become HIPSTORY. What began as a critical investigation on the values of a generation quickly shifted to the creation of an international language seeking to explore the individuals who continue to shape our reality. This endeavor brought forth a curated cast of mentors that shed light on why our world is the way it is. The creation of Israeli’s first Prime Minister David Ben Gurion’s contemporary image garnished a tremendous response from Shimoni’s peers and professors. He began to create other political figures, Theodore Herzl and Golda Meir, in similar fashion. The portraits began going viral in Israel. Shimoni realized that this was going to be his final project and the beginning of HIPSTORY.

The exhibition, funded in part by Jewish Community Foundation and the Annual Campaign of Jewish Federation of Atlantic & Cape May Counties will be on display at the Milton & Betty Katz JCC’s Staller Gallery, 501 N Jerome Ave., Margate, beginning March 21 and lasting through the Spring.  All prints are available for purchase.  Proceeds will benefit the Milton & Betty Katz JCC.  For more information, contact Josh Cutler at 609-822-1167 ext. 138 or jcutler@jccatlantic.org.

Camp By The Sea

The Katz JCC’s Camp By The Sea was able to provide a fun and exciting, yet modified camp experience in 2020 with over 100 campers here at our Margate, NJ location.  As we plan for our 2021 summer we are gearing up for the real thing!

Working in conjunction with the Department of Health, CDC and American Camp Association we are aiming for a traditional camp experience here at the Jersey Shore’s top Summer camp, incorporating the necessary guidelines to ensure a safe and healthy summer for all of our camp families.

Here is what we can promise you; children need Camp By The Sea this Summer more than ever! After a year of hybrid and virtual schooling, kids need to get off their computers and tablets, get outdoors and return to a camp environment that is safe, supportive, and hands on.  They need to reconnect with friends and enjoy the memorable activities they have come to love at Camp By The Sea, all while remaining under the supervision of experienced staff that will continue to enforce the highest level of COVID-19 Guidelines set by the CDC and State Government.

Katz JCC Unveils Renovated Family Locker Rooms Made Possible by Donation from Carolyn and Mitchell Davis

The Milton & Betty Katz JCC is proud to formally unveil the newly renovated and designated Family Locker Rooms thanks to a generous donation from Carolyn and Mitchell Davis.  The ribbon cutting will take place Friday, October 2 at 3:00pm at the Katz JCC, 501 N. Jerome Ave., Margate.

The locker rooms, located just off the indoor pool area of the community center, received a complete remodel to incorporate over 160 new lockers in both locker areas that our camp program, swim team and swim lesson families will find most accommodating. Along with the additional locker space there are new restroom stalls, beautiful new showers, lighting and epoxy nonslip floors.

“This past early spring, during the darker days of COVID-19, our building was closed and this continued for over two months. The days were made easier to come in while the wonderful renovation was taking place. Carolyn and Mitchell Davis provided us with the hope that brighter days were to follow and our families would be surprised and excited to see this change when they returned,” said Marg Rosenblatt, JCC CEO.

The locker room space will be dedicated to members with children and those children participating in swim team, swim lessons, and camp during specified hours. The family locker rooms will help create a safe and enjoyable environment for young families participating in the JCC’s various programs.

For more information, please call 609-822-1167 or stop by the Welcome Desk in the JCC lobby.
