Boxx for Tots

JCC’s Jon Simon Raise over $12,500 in Toy Collection to Date through Boxx for Tots Toy Drive

Margate, NJ (December 20, 2016) – Jon Simon’s Boxx for Tots holiday toy drive at The Milton & Betty Katz Jewish Community Center, 501 N. Jerome Avenue in Margate has raised over $12,500 in monetary and toy donations and successfully completed one Boxx for Tots boxing class.  These classes and the toy collection will continue from now until December 23, 2016.

According to Katz JCC Personal Trainer Jon Simon, this year the event collected more than 6,000 toys for area children and are distributed to charities including Jewish Family Service, The Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS) of Atlantic County, Our Lady Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church of Atlantic City, and directly to local families in need.

The Eternal Refuge of Absecon is a recipient of some of the toys donated through Boxx for Tots. “We are a community in need and have had a difficult time finding help around this time of year before our relationship with Boxx for Tots,” said Jairo Zapata, Pastor of The Eternal Refuge.  “This program has given children in our community so much joy.”

This year, a prior benefiting charity, Hope For Atlantic City, was able to give back to Boxx for Tots.  “After receiving toys for the families in our community in 2014 and 2015, we were excited to be able to contribute to other families in need this year,” said Hope for Atlantic City representative, Jamie Cohen. “This year we had donations come in to our organization so we were able to support Boxx for Tots by bringing in toys and taking part in a boxing class.”  Hope for Atlantic City, a non-profit organization based in Atlantic City, was a toy recipient the last two years.

Toy donations can be brought to the Katz JCC Front Desk.

Additionally, participants of Simon’s boxing class may bring in a new unwrapped toy and the class fee will be waived for the remaining Boxx for Tots classes on December 22 at 6:45pm and December 23 at 10:45am.
Children ages 4-10 can also participate by bringing in a toy during the Tots for Tots boxing class on Wednesday, December 21 at 4 pm. Held in the JCC auditorium, music and special guest appearances will be featured during the holiday boxing classes.

Expanding Early Childhood Curriculum

The Katz JCC is excited to expand its already trusted and accredited education programs with new curriculum and partnerships with several area agencies. Partnerships include the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey, the Atlantic City Aquarium and the ShopRite of Somers Point. These agencies will provide monthly programming in our preschool and day care classes.

“It is our hope that these partnerships will continue to inspire a love of learning in each and every child that passes through our door, creating lifelong learners,” Jan Higbee, Early Childhood Education Director.

The Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey has created a curriculum especially for preschool children centered on endangered species indigenous to New Jersey.

The Atlantic City Aquarium’s curriculum will focus on marine life native to the Jersey Shore, with classes culminating in a field trip to the Aquarium for our three & four-year-old classes.

Jesse Tannehill, Dietician at the Shop Rite of Somers Point will be providing fresh fruits and vegetables for our children to sample. In addition we will be revamping our community garden this coming spring and engaging students in a farm to table project of growing produce to use in their classrooms.

The JCC Early Childhood Education Center is currently in the process of becoming accredited with Grow NJ Kids, which is New Jersey’s Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS) for schools within the state. Accredited schools are assessed and rated after Grow NJ Kids has observed classes within each school, giving parents a consistent rating system to compare child care centers.

Through participation in the Grow NJ Kids program, we were able to purchase a complete set of Creative Curriculum materials for each classroom. Teachers are currently reviewing the new materials and will receive training from a certified Grow NJ Kids representative by the end of October.

The Creative Curriculum utilizes both whole group and small group instruction to guide students through 38 learning objectives that directly align with the NJ State Early Childhood Learning standards.

Milton & Betty Katz JCC Fitness Center Lobby RenovationFifteen years ago, the JCC went through a dramatic transformation from a 60-year-old 50,000 sq ft building into a newly expanded 75,000 sq ft state-of-the-art facility. This included renovations to the auditorium, indoor pool area, and the addition of the new gym, preschool and new second floor offices  that include Bacharach Rehabilitation center and the Jewish Federation of Atlantic and Cape May County.  Recently you may have noticed that the JCC has been upgrading the fitness equipment, 30 new spin bikes, 5 new treadmills and a few other pieces of equipment.

The JCC is excited to plan for additional upgrades to the facility. In the next few months, we will be painting, adding new carpet and upgrading the lobby furnishings along with replacing some of the aging air conditioning and heating units. After the 2016 capital campaign is completed and funds are raised, we will be improving the locker rooms and spa facilities and replacing additional heating and air-conditioning units.

We appreciate your support and patience while we go through these improvements in order to remain a premier Health, Fitness and Wellness facility, Early Childhood Education Center and Community Center in the area. We hope you notice the improvements and we will keep you posted as we continue the progress.

Active Adult & Senior Health Expo

Wednesday, September 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

An attractive senior couple out for a bike ride together.

The Milton & Betty Katz JCC and the Greater Atlantic City Chamber Senior & Active Adult Expo has become the largest active adult health and wellness exhibit in New Jersey. Its focus on lifestyle and active aging for baby boomers and seniors has reached more than 3,000 adults, seniors and caregivers each year in its eight-year history.

Thousands of area residents will attend this lifestyle, health and active aging expo for baby boomers and seniors for health screenings, presentations by area providers, flu shots and fitness classes. The event brings together more than 50 vendors, a five-part speaker series, interactive demonstrations and a morning speaker panel.

“The annual Senior and Active Adult Expo is targeted to the 50+ adult who wants to gather information about living a healthy active lifestyle,” Chief Operating Officer of the Katz JCC Marg Mancuso said. “The event is not only informative but fun as well.”

The morning speaker panel will offer a free continental breakfast at 10:30 a.m. and provide guests an opportunity to ask the panel of professionals questions on the chosen topic.

We are excited to add another health-related component to the Senior & Active Adult Expo,” Mancuso said. “The addition of a medical professional speaker panel last year was so successful that we want to continue this component of the expo and this year we have been able to bring together some of the top medical professionals in our area to help baby boomers and seniors make important health and lifestyle decisions”

Free shuttles sponsored by the Atlantic County Department of Intergenerational Services will be available from the Shore Mall in Egg Harbor Township, as well as 55 and older communities in Longport, Margate, Ventnor and Atlantic City beginning at 10:00 a.m. and operating every 30 minutes.

Special caregivers are encouraged to attend.

“We recognize the dedication and involvement of special caregivers in this growing segment of the Atlantic County population,” Mancuso said. “Whether you are a concerned relative, a specialist in the assistance of the aging, or someone involved in the industries that focus on assistance, we will have available a wealth of information, including a special booth section, lectures and interactive discussions just for you.”
