Free Parent & Tot Classes

IMG_3047Margate – Being a new parent can be exhilarating but exhausting, wonderful but isolating. Sleep deprivation and limited time for yourself can throw you into a very different life – one that you could have never imagined. But take solace in the fact that you are not alone. You can find camaraderie, education, and fun, in a “Parent & Tot” support group at the Katz JCC Early Childhood Education Center.

At the Katz JCC Early Childhood Education Center we offer FREE Parent & Tot classes that provide you an opportunity to socialize with other new parents while providing a place for your child to experience a fun activity, develop fine motor skills and foster creativity.

Parent & Tot classes are held on the second Monday of each month from 10:00 AM-11:00 AM. The classes are designed for parents of children under 24 months old. Parents who can rely on the support of other parents going through the same experience with children the same age often say that it makes a very positive difference in their lives, in both the short and long term. No one understands your struggles, or your day-to-day triumphs, the way other new parents do.

The Parent & Tot classes at the J not only offer friendship and encouragement, but help parents and toddlers by providing monthly themed-based classes filled with motor and sensory activities. Circle time includes stories, singing, dancing and fun-filled finger plays. Lively discussion time helps parents discover new ways to interact with and stimulate their children.

Topics of discussion during the classes can include the importance of routines and sleep, general baby care, infant massage, teething, and bonding. “These groups create a wonderful, supportive, nonjudgmental atmosphere. They don’t teach you how to parent,” explains Katz JCC Early Childhood Education Director Jan Higbee. “They’re there for support. You can vent, you can laugh together, you can cry, and other new parents are there with you. Parents can bring their children, but it’s not a play group—it’s a class made especially for them,” she continued.

The Katz JCC Fitness Facility Free Open House January 4 to 10

MARGATE – The Katz JCC fitness facility is more than just a gym – It’s a community. It’s a community open to everyone.  The public is encouraged to visit the JCC fitness facility during a free open house from January 4 to 10, 2016 during regular business hours.

The JCC fitness facility is open Monday through Thursday 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

When choosing a gym, does the idea of choosing a “community” come to mind? Most gyms are filled with people with their heads down, headphones in, and who keep to themselves. These gyms offer equipment, but not opportunities to meet new friends, business associates or just new workout partners.

That sense of community, however, is available at the Katz JCC fitness facility in Margate.

At the Katz JCC fitness facility in Margate, the leaders, staff and trainers have two goals in mind for their members. The first is that everyone who steps foot into the facility experiences real, life-changing results. The second is that everyone who steps foot into the facility also feels a sense of community.

“I believe that helping people improve and achieve their health and wellness goals is actually contingent on creating a strong sense of community. With developing a sense of community among the members, I have witnessed more people with a desire to attend classes, push themselves harder and strive for greatness. This desire is created when providing an environment where everyone shares common attitudes, interest and goals,” Chief Operating Officer Marg Mancuso said.

The Katz JCC fitness facility in Margate is offering a free  one-week open house from January 4 through January 10 highlighting the 85 weekly group exercise classes, the variety of membership categories including couple and student, updated fitness equipment, and an expansive facility.

“We have something for everyone here at the Katz JCC fitness facility from mind body classes to Insanity group exercise classes,” Group Exercise Director Antoinette Wood said.  “From children to seniors, from families to single adults, the JCC staff pride themselves on creating health and wellness opportunities for everyone at every fitness level.”

002The Katz JCC fitness facility is an expansive facility offering a 25-meter indoor heated saltwater pool and an outdoor recreation pool, two racquetball courts, full-size air conditioned basketball court, mind and body studio, group exercise studio, dedicated cycling room, KidZ Fit afterschool group exercise classes, full-service fitness floor with cardio and weight training, personal and small group instruction, locker, whirlpool, sauna and massage rooms.

“We have recently upgraded our fitness equipment to meet the needs of those seeking a challenging workout. We have everything the $1-a-day fitness facilities offer and more. With our competitive rates and variety of membership packages to suit individual needs, we believe we not only compete with those places, but exceed customers’ expectations,” Personal Training and Fitness Floor Director Remy Pelosi said.

“We are so confident that those who are not familiar with our facility, that once they are able to experience it, they will want to become a part of the Katz JCC fitness family,” Mancuso said. “As such, we are offering a one-week free open house so everyone can experience what we have to offer.”

The mission of the Milton & Betty Katz JCC of Atlantic County is to foster an appreciation of Jewish identity, values and culture, to promote health, education and welfare of our members, to strengthen Jewish family life, to build a sense of community and ensure Jewish continuity for our children, our children’s children and ourselves.

Katz JCC Author Speaker Series November through December

MARGATE – The Milton & Betty Katz Jewish Community Center, 501 N. Jerome Avenue, Margate, presents its Fall Author Speaker Series in November and December featuring Jewish related topics on current affairs, Jewish thought on Mid-East politics and Jewish contributions to literature, art and science.

“We are excited to bring this Author Speaker Series to the community. We believe the topics that will be discussed are educational and intriguing,” Katz JCC Chief Executive Officer Jack I. Fox said.

Dr. Alon GratchOn Sunday, November 8 at 3 p.m. Dr. Alon Gratch will discuss his book The Israeli Mind – How the Israeli National Character Shapes our World.

Gratch is an Israeli-American psychologist, organizational consult, and author. During his presentation, Dr. Gratch will present a compelling portrait of the Israeli national character. Gratch draws on a broad cultural and historical canvas and weaves his own personal experience.

The Israeli Mind shares his interpretation of the Israeli struggle for identity: “they are willing to sacrifice themselves for the collective narrative but also to sacrifice that very collective- for a higher and likely unattainable goal…” he states in the book.

As a psychologist, Dr. Gratch has been on the faculty of Columbia University and as a consultant he has advised companies such as Pepsi, Nabisco, and the NFL.  Dr. Gratch is the author of two previous books, If Love Could Think: Using Your Mind To Guide Your Heart and If Men Could Talk: Here’s What They’d Say.

Lawrence BaronOn Sunday, November 22 at 3 p.m. Author Lawrence Baron will present his book Projecting the Holocaust into the Present – The Changing Focus of Contemporary Holocaust Cinema.

Baron, emeritus professor of history at San Diego State University and a regular contributor to San Diego Jewish World, has recently been appointed the Ida E. King Distinguished Visiting Professor of Holocaust Studies by the Richard Stockton University.

Baron is the author of Projecting the Holocaust into the Present, which traces how movie-makers addressed Holocaust themes over the years.  Recognizing that movies reach a greater audience than eyewitness, historical, or literary accounts, Baron argues that they mirror changing public perceptions of the Holocaust over time and place. After tracing the evolution of the most commonly employed genres and themes in earlier Holocaust motion pictures, he focuses on how films from the l990s made the Holocaust relevant for contemporary audiences.

Alina BliumusOn Tuesday, December 8 at 7 p.m., Author and Photographer Alina Bliumus will speak on her latest book titled From Selfie to Groupie.

From Selfie to Groupie is a book of photographs and essays exploring the variety and intricacy of Jewish-American identity. Alina and Jeff Bliumus began their visual survey in the Russian-Jewish immigrant enclave of Brooklyn’s Brighton Beach before expanding to the wider Jewish-American community in locations from New York to Philadelphia to Miami.

In total, 1,922 people participated in creating a portrait of the Jewish community – in its many shades, shapes, and sizes – and a collaborative statement about collective identity. Participants ranged from a two-year-old girl who identified herself as a “future president” to vice presidential candidate Joseph Lieberman, who identified himself as “a proud and grateful Jewish American.”

Joshua MuravchikLastly, the Katz JCC Author Speaker Series will conclude with Author Joshua Muravchik on Wednesday, December 16 at 7 p.m. with a presentation on his book Making David Into Goliath – How the World Turned Against Israel.

During the Six Day War of 1967 polls showed that Americans favored the Israelis over the Arabs by overwhelming margins. In Europe, support for Israel ran even higher.  Fast forward 40 years and Israel has become perhaps the most criticized country in the world. Although Americans have remained constant in their sympathy for the Jewish state, almost all of the rest of the world treats Israel as a pariah.  What caused this remarkable turnabout? Making David into Goliath traces the process by which material pressures and intellectual fashions reshaped world opinion of Israel.

In addition to hundreds of articles, stories and publications, Muravchik is the author of 11 books, of which the most noted have been Making David Into Goliath: How the World Turned Against Israel (2014), Heaven on Earth: The Rise and Fall of Socialism (2002), and Exporting Democracy: Fulfilling America’s Destiny (1991).

Tickets are $7 for Members and $10 for Non-Members per each author. Tickets can also be purchased as a package for all four performances at $22 for Members and $36 for Non-Members.

Come Sweat for a Cause: Katz JCC Hosts Jon Simon’s Boxx for Tots Toy Drive Now until December 22

MARGATE – The Milton & Betty Katz Jewish Community Center, 501 N. Jerome Avenue in Margate, will once again host Jon Simon’s Boxx for Tots holiday toy collection drive from now until December 22, 2015.

Fitness_Boxx-for-Tots_V3

According to Katz JCC Personal Trainer Jon Simon, last year the event collected more than 3,500 toys for area children and were distributed to charities including Jewish Family Service, The Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS) of Atlantic County, Our Lady Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church of Atlantic City, and directly to local families in need.

“Collecting toys through my boxing classes began ten years ago when I saw that the Toys for Tots collection program in my area was not getting the attention it deserved,” Simon said. “So instead of collecting my usual fee for the boxing class that year, I told my participants to bring in a toy for the kids – because every kid needs a new toy.”

According to Simon and the JCC, the interest in donating has grown each year so the toy drive has been extended beyond his special boxing class events.  People interested in donating can bring toys to the Katz JCC’s Front Desk or when they come to take part in one of the boxing classes on December 17 and 22 at 6:45 p.m. and December 18 at 11:45 a.m. Participants of Simon’s boxing class may bring in a new unwrapped toy and the class fee will be waived. Kids can also participate in giving this holiday and bring in a toy during the KIDZ fit boxing class on December 15 at 4 p.m.

Boxing is just one of many classes offered at the JCC’s Fitness Center. “We have added several new classes to our schedule this year to help our members change up their routines and enhance their fitness goals in 2016!” explains JCC Group Fitness Director, Antoinette Wood. New classes include Barre, a total body workout using ballet style bar to strengthen, tone and improve flexibility, TRX, the original suspension workout and several Mind – Body classes including Meditation. Bring a toy when you come in to the JCC to enjoy one of the many group exercise and mind body classes offered throughout the week.

The final class on December 22, featuring a live DJ Paul Laup of Atlantic City and violinist D. Sharpe is the last opportunity to sweat for this great cause!

“We are happy once again to support Jon’s efforts in collecting toys for area children at our community center,” Chief Operating Officer of the Katz JCC Marg Mancuso said. “Regardless of race, religion or national origin, the Katz JCC aims to reach the entire community in any way we can. We hope the toys Jon collects and distributes helps put a smile on many children’s faces.”

Scheduled for May 28th at Linwood Country Club, this men’s and women’s competition style tournament will bring the community together for a great day of golf, contests, prizes and more.
