The next Katz JCC Brunch & Learn Event will take place on Wednesday, March 12, at 10:30 AM. We will enjoy a delicious brunch followed by a speaker and a documentary on the big screen. This month, Rabbi Avraham Rapoport from Chabad at the Shore will discuss the topic “ When You Are Not in the Mood of Your Spouse” He will explain how a cryptic Talmudic passage which records the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai more than 3,300 years ago, holds timely lessons for modern relationships.
After the discussion, we will watch the documentary film Mamadrama, The Jewish Mother In Cinema. Mamadrama combines film clips, cultural commentary, interviews with Hollywood and Israeli filmmakers and footage from Schwarz’s earlier films in an exploration of the image of the Jewish mother in film beginning with early silent and Yiddish films up through contemporary movies. Hollywood directors and film critics reflect on their Jewish mothers and discuss the changing image of the Jewish mother on screen.
Mamadrama also features hilarious film clips from Come Blow Your Horn, Goodbye Columbus, Next Stop Greenwich Village, The Jazz Singer, Portnoy’s Complaint, Where’s Poppa, Torch Song Trilogy, rare Yiddish films and recent Israeli features. Interspersed throughout is the story of Schwarz’s own mother, Berta, from her life in Vienna before World War II to her struggles as an immigrant, a picture of a woman vastly different from the Jewish mothers seen in contemporary films.
